retinol products i love
Jordan Samuel Skin Retinol Treatment Oil: This is a wonderful retinol treatment. Jordan’s company is direct-to-consumer, so his pricing is very reasonable, but anyone in the beauty industry will tell you his formulas are spot-on. This product contains marula oil (from the nut of the marula tree) and cranberry seed oil to balance out the drying effects of vitamin A.
Renée Rouleau Advanced Resurfacing Serum: This serum is great for repairing sun damage or reversing the effects of aging on sensitive skin. It’s balanced with peptides and glucosamine for super hydration, so it won’t dry out your skin. I love the way this woman makes a formula, and you won’t be disappointed!
My Supernova Serum is the formula I am most proud of, and it was voted Readers’ Choice Best Serum by InStyle magazine in 2018. It combines vitamin A, chamomile, and fatty acids to soothe, balance, and hydrate, and retinol to promote rapid cell turnover and reveal younger-looking skin.
TONERS
Anyone who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s remembers what toners used to be: alcohol-based to the extreme, they practically sucked the oil out of you the second you wiped them over your skin, leaving you tight and parched. Gone are those days, thank goodness, and now I consider toner to be a very useful part of a good beauty routine.
Toners should be used after you’ve removed your makeup and cleansed your skin. Unlike a face wash, there is no need to rinse off a toner; your skin will absorb it right away. Applied with a cotton pad or clean fingertips, the toner sweeps away any leftover residue, creating a fresh palette onto which you can apply serum, moisturizer, or other products. But depending on their ingredients, toners can be much more than just an extra step in cleansing, offering benefits like soothing, clarifying, and moisturizing your skin, while also restoring its pH balance.
The type of toner you should use is entirely dependent on your skin type. While people with very dry skin don’t need to use toner, I believe it is a must if you have oily skin. If you have acne, I recommend using a toner that contains salicylic acid. If your skin is sensitive, choose one that contains calming ingredients, like calendula or other plant botanicals. People with dull skin may prefer a toner that contains a natural exfoliant, like papaya extract or lactic acid, while aging skin usually responds well to toners with hyaluronic acid or rose water. Trust me, there are hundreds and hundreds of toners on the market for almost all types of skin, and you can find one that’s best for you just by reading the label, checking out reviews online, and trying them out.
If you have oily skin, apply toner as often as twice a day after cleansing. If you have dry skin, you should look for a nourishing, hydrating rose water spray or some other type of hydrating formula. After applying toner, always remember to moisturize within a minute so that your skin can hydrate immediately.
